Three contenders are out and seven remain in the hunt for the Repco Supercars Championship after the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 opened the Supercars Finals Series at Surfers Paradise.

Saturday belonged to Chaz Mostert, who mastered treacherous wet conditions in the 250km Race 31. The Walkinshaw TWG driver passed polesitter Broc Feeney at the end of the opening lap after the Safety Car start and never looked back, recording the biggest winning margin in Gold Coast Supercars history.

It was the defending Supercars champion’s third win of the season and the 200th in Walkinshaw TWG history, and it booked him automatic passage to the next finals round. David Reynolds finished second, with Matt Payne third after a five-second track limits penalty cost him the runner-up spot.

Sunday brought dry skies and a long-awaited result for Feeney, who converted pole into his first win on home soil in his fifth year of trying. The Triple Eight driver led Brodie Kostecki and Mostert home in Race 32 to secure his own place in the next round.

Behind them, the elimination battle went to the final lap. Ryan Wood, Kai Allen and Jack Le Brocq were the three drivers cut from the finals field, with Wood missing out on the seventh and final berth by just 18 points despite finishing fourth.

Walkinshaw TWG tried everything to get him through, with Mostert ceding third place late in the race before late-race fuel stops by rivals swung the maths back in Anton De Pasquale’s favour.

Payne leaves the Gold Coast on top of the finals ladder with Feeney just behind followed by Kostecki, Mostert, Will Brown, Cameron Waters and De Pasquale. It means there are five Fords, one Toyota and one Chevrolet still in championship contention.

The Penrite Oil Sandown 500 on November 6 to 8 is next, where the seven will be trimmed to four. Those four will arrive at the bp Adelaide Grand Final from November 26 to 29 with the title live across three races and 600km of racing.
