The bp Adelaide Grand Final delivered the drama that was promised, with Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Chaz Mostert winning his first Repco Supercars Championship.
The championship showdown produced its decisive flashpoint at Turn 6 on the opening lap, when Mostert’s teammate Ryan Wood tangled with Triple Eight Race Engineering’s championship leader Broc Feeney.
Feeney was turned around and plummeted down the order, while Wood was handed a 15-second time penalty for the collision. With Feeney leading Mostert by 23 points entering the race, the championship picture was turned on its head with Mostert moving up to second place and the title advantage.
Feeney’s hopes of recovering from the collision came undone with engine gremlins, while Mostert held on to second place to secure the points he needed to win his first Supercars championship after 13 seasons, two Bathurst 1000 wins and three third places in the points standings.
Grove Racing’s Matthew Payne got the jump on pole-sitting Feeney and led from start to finish, claiming his second Adelaide 500/Grand Final round win.
Joining Payne and Mostert on the podium was Will Brown, who also finished third in the championship behind Mostert and Feeney with Kai Allen fourth in the race and the championship.
Anton De Pasquale, Brodie Kostecki, Andre Heimgartner, Cameron Hill, Thomas Randle and Bryce Fullwood rounded out the top 10.
